A little bit about me and my job
Hi! My name is Nora, and now I am going to tell you about a normal day for me. I live in a flat at Tøyen, with my husband Håkon-Filip. I am 29 years old, and a pretty normal person.
In the morning I (mostly) get up sometime between 06.30AM and 07.00AM, and take a shower before I eat breakfast. After breakfast I take out our dog for a walk before I go to work. I get to work by travelling with bus, subway, bicycling, running or walking. It mostly depends on the weather, and if it’s summer or winter. My job is only 4,7 km away from our flat.
I work full-time (35,5t a week) as a nurse at “Ullevål Universitets Sykehus”. In English I would be something like “Ullevål University Hospital”. I work at the heart medical division. Here we treat every kind of heart problems, infarct of the heart, heart failure and other heart diseases. Mostly I start at work by 08.00AM, but as a nurse I work shifts, and sometimes I don’t start before 02.00PM.
When I get there I sign inn, put my stuff inn my cupboard, and check my working list. After that I take a patient round. There I check all my patients, make sure they are okay. After my patient round I give them there breakfast bricks. It’s toasted bread and a glass whit milk or juice. It’s not always this food, but it’s most normal. Sometimes they get egg and bacon or serial. When I am done with that, I start mixing there medicine, and give it to them whit there doctor. Science I am only a nurse a doctor has to be there when I give the patients there medicine. This can take an hour or two.
Around 10.00AM I start to make lunch bricks. Like there breakfast they don’t get the same food every day, we want it to be a little variation. They can get bread, soup, scrambled egg and stuff like that. They get milk, juice, water or lemonade. When it’s 11.00 AM we start to hand out the lunch bricks.
At 11.30 I eat me own lunch whit my colleagues and friends, we eat the same lunch as our patients. It’s a very nice lunch, we talk about what has happed to us that day, what we are going to do, and we help each other if we are stuck. I am supposed to eat my lunch 11.30AM, but often some things comes up unexpectedly, so we eat when we have time. We have lunch 30 minutes every day.
After my lunch I am with the doctor who has the responsibility for the same patients as I have. I do whatever he or she tells me to do, it’s often the most dirty jobs.
Around 03.00PM I start to make dinner bricks. They get there dinner brick sometime between 05.00PM and 06.00PM, that’s after my day is over, but its still my responsibility to make sure the dinner bricks are ready.
Before I go home I have to make a detailed report about my work that day, and give it to my doctor-partner. When I am done with that I am free to go home, but I can’t go home before 04.00PM.
My job is a very busy job, there is always something to do. Every day it happens at least one unexpected thing, maybe some of the patients gets really ill, or we get in a new patient who need operation right away. I help on some operations, those who are with my patients, and if there is an emergency everbody is ready to help.
I love my job, it’s something I always wanted to work as. One of my dreams is to be a special nurse. I don’t know as what yet, but I will find out one day, and then I am going to make my dream come true.
I got this job by going 3 years at høyskolen in Oslo. My first job as a nurse was at Diakonhjemmet, where I worked for 5 years. After that I worked at Karolinska sjukhus in Stockholm (Sweden), for 2 years. No I have this job as a nurse at Ullevål. Ullevål looks pretty much like other hospitals, almost everything is white and it’s many sterile stuff all around.
Me and my husband get home around the same time. One of us takes Leika out for a walk, and the other one start at the days dinner. We eat a lot of different food, but our favourites are taco and chicken. We usually make our own dinner, but sometimes we eat out on a restaurant or bring home ‘take-away’. During dinner we talk about how our day was and stuff like that.
After dinner we have a “time-off”, some time to relax and do whatever we want to do. If I didn’t read the newspaper during breakfast I read it now. Sometimes I read a book (mostly criminals), watch TV or work on the computer.
After the news we take Leika out for a walk, both of us, and walk around an hour. If there is a good movie at TV we watch it when we get back. I go to bed around 11.00PM and midnight.
On Wednesdays I am at an agility course with Leika, and on Fridays we (me and Leika) have a long walk with Katrine and her dog Rex. On Mondays I work as a swimming instructor (it’s volunteer and I don’t get paid for it) for a group with ten children.
Now you know a little bit about me, my job and my family.
